Meetings, Conferences, Exhibitions, Business Events, Special Events, Incentives and Public Events / Festivals - the industry is varied and exciting!

These industry sectors cover a wide range of services. Meeting and events services include managing domestic and international conferences and meetings, destination and incentives management and special event management.

They also include attractions, purpose built convention and exhibition centres, vessels, resorts and a range of hotel, boutique and special/unique locations for meetings, conventions and exhibitions. Convention & Visitors Bureaux and tourist organisations are included in this sector.

The Exhibitions sector specialises in exhibitions and trade shows, which provide opportunities for people to view new products, network with people with similar interests, catch up with new technology etc.

A wide range of businesses support the industry such as accommodation, catering, computer services, conference suppliers and services, conference communication services, gifts and accessories, entertainers and entertainment booking agencies, speakers, MCs and Speakers bureaus. In addition, audio visual services, multi media productions and staging and production services play a big role in the sector.

Education, including on-going Professional Development, is important to the industry because (along with Accreditation and Awards programs) it raises the standard of practice for industry personnel. With raised standards the reputation of the individual as well as the industry as a whole will increase, as will consumer confidence. Earning the reputation as a professional industry will have valuable and far reaching effects – not the least of which will be the potential to bring into line charges and fees with actual hours worked.

There are an increasing number of tertiary institutions that offer ‘event management' courses and degrees around Australia. From the short courses to the extensive Masters degrees, both the quality of courses and diversity of subjects vary. There are currently more graduates than jobs available and competition for industry placements is great. MEA offer an extensive range of Professional Development subjects annually around Australia http://www.meetingsevents.com.au/training and also in New Zealand through the CINZ / MEA Centre for Excellence. On this page you will find direct links to educational facilities around the country that offer tertiary industry education. These institutions have placed their information onto this site to assist you with locating the right tertiary course for you. This will not be a complete national list, nor is it necessarily a list of MEA recommended courses – however it will give you a place to start when looking for the course that fits your personal requirements. If you require career advice, many of these institutions have councillors that can point you in the right direction.
