The eyes of the world have now turned to the stunning centre of Western Australia, with the arrival of Australia 's newest purpose-built convention, exhibition and meeting venue, the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre - the chosen venue for the 2005 MEA National Conference.
The impressive three-level venue located in the heart of Perth's CBD caters for up to 5,000 delegates and includes facilities such as a 2,500-seat tiered auditorium, 19 specialist meeting rooms varying in size, six exhibition pavilions, and ballrooms with spectacular views of Perth's sparkling Swan River.
Visitors are welcomed into a 300-metre long, floor-to-ceiling glass foyer, and all three levels of The Perth Convention Exhibition Centre feature expansive pre-function and foyer areas, providing panoramic city views.
The venue houses some of the most advanced communications infrastructure and services in Australia.
Delegate facilities include a business centre, green room, organisers' office suites, cloakrooms, VIP room, media room and cafe. Office areas and cafes are also featured within each of the six Pavilions, spanning some 16,500 square metres of exhibition space.
Chief Executive of The Perth Convention Exhibition Centre, Mr Paul D'Arcy said “Now that we are open for business, we look forward to showcasing the unique virtues of our city and The Perth Centre to the National MEA conference attendees.”
Introducing ‘Ernie'
In a nationwide convention industry first and as an endorsement of the catch phrase ‘Beyond the Conventional', an animated quokka, ‘Ernie', has become The Perth Centre's official mascot.
The furry and colourful character is the new ‘face' of The Perth Centre, and will be on hand at the MEA National Conference to promote the uniqueness of Western Australia and The Perth Centre.
Named after well known and highly regarded West Australian Ernie Dingo, in recognition of his contribution to tourism in the State, Ernie the Mascot is part of the venue's alternative approach to attracting attention in the competitive meetings and events industry nationally and globally.
Native to Western Australia 's Rottnest Island , the quokka is a small marsupial much like a wallaby or pint-sized kangaroo. He is easygoing and friendly by nature, yet possesses vitality and resilience not unlike Western Australia and its people.
Food and Beverage at The Perth Centre
In association with Mustard Catering, The Perth Centre will showcase to MEA conference delegates, the foods symbolising Western Australia, through the use of fresh, local ingredients, combined with an innovative and contemporary approach to tastes and presentations.
A team of highly skilled, internationally experienced chefs, led by Executive Chef, Adrian Tobin, has created menus to reflect the Western Australian Mediterranean climate, while embracing Asian, classical European and other international culinary influences.
The Perth Centre's kitchen team comprises approximately 80 staff with career origins from all over the world, including South Africa, Ireland, France, Kuwait, China and Australia.
Together, they prepare and serve fresh, restaurant-quality cuisine to a multitude of events, ranging from boardroom lunches for 10 to conference banquets for 5,000 people.
