Congratulations to Tina Young, MEA's Newest Diploma of Event Management (SIT50316) Graduate

MEA enjoys partnering with Destination NSW to deliver the MEA Diploma of Event Management (SIT50316) as part of a regional scholarship program designed to upskill event professionals across NSW.

"The business events sector presents a major opportunity for the visitor economy of regional NSW, particularly as we steer our path to recovery,” Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said.

We know that the best way forward is to help to create more jobs and these scholarships will do exactly that - giving people the tools and extra support needed to kick-start their careers in the field of event management.

Recent graduate Tina Young was an invaluable asset to the training room and generously shared her experience, ideas and insights while completing the Diploma. As an integral part of the study group, Tina's participation was always appreciated by trainers and fellow students alike. Tina's expertise, great attention to detail and interest in all things in the event world will be used in her varied and busy role with Eurobodalla Shire Councill.

MEA were able to catch up with Tina to ask her about what she found valuable about the program, what she's most looking forward to now that she's done, and any piece of advice she has for those looking to do the Diploma.

Q: Tina, what did you learn during SIT50316 Diploma of Event Management course?

"The Diploma of Event Management course provided a great insight into the vast array of tasks that need to be considered and managed. It showed the importance of not only the large and obvious components of event management, but also the tiny details that make the difference between a mediocre and memorable event. The course provided an excellent understanding of managing resources, conflict, operations, business relationships and contracts. The marketing and social media strategies courses were also very comprehensive and topical, as was risk management, customer service and project management. We were often provided links to additional resources, which are amazingly useful, not only for the course, but also for the future. I was encouraged to use my imagination and creativity, and to look at what could be done to create an exciting and successful event within the allocated budget."

Q: What was your favourite topic?

"It’s very difficult to say what my favourite topic was, as there were a few – possibly Develop and Implement Marketing Strategies. This course not only provided instruction on how to create this strategy, but also how to do the research to ensure the work you are doing is evidenced-based. Our instructor gave excellent guidance along with relevant examples and arranged guest presenters to allow us to benefit from different experiences, knowledge and perspectives."

Q: How will you use what you have learned in your current role?

"I will use the knowledge I have gained to help local event organisers develop and deliver better events which are rewarding, meet their aims and are sustainable into the future. We are restarting our events program within the shire with COVID-19 safe events, so the time is right.

I am also hopeful that the Major Project event I focussed on can take place soon, as it showcases such a broad range of fabulous outdoor activities that are available in the beautiful and natural environment I am lucky to live in. The research I undertook for the course highlighted the uniqueness of this event and the rapid growth of the market it addresses, making it a potentially valuable event for the region."

Q: What are you most looking forward to now that you have the SIT50316 Diploma of Event Management qualification under your belt?

"In the very short term, I’m looking forward to having a bit more time to catch up with friends, family, pets and a few good Netflix shows.

"After that, I am looking forward to being able to provide useful information to our community and local event organiser to assist them in developing good events. I would like to be able to offer support from the initial stages through to completion, with the aim of developing more professional, appealing and viable events with more successful outcomes. Good events add vibrancy, encourage visitors to come to the region, to stay longer and also enhance the spirit and pride of the community."

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to those thinking about doing the course, what would you say?

"The course is challenging, but it is informative and extremely useful. In addition to course material, students are offered access to reports, presentations and additional information, which is really valuable. Undertaking the course and accessing the extra services requires considerable commitment, but it is entirely worthwhile. My advice would be to understand what you are committing to and then take full advantage of what is on offer, as it is a brilliant opportunity."

Q: Any final feedback?

"I would strongly commend this course to anyone involved in Event Management. I would very much like to thank:

  • Meetings & Events Australia for delivering the course so thoroughly, with educators who were immensely informative, experienced and interesting. Thank you also for providing access to wealth of additional information via reports, webinars, presentations, industry experts and mentoring activities.
  • Destination NSW for the scholarship and the brilliant opportunity it created
  • Eurobodalla Shire Council, for supporting me in my endeavours"
